Testing an Audio pot

The change of an old audio potentiometer for a new one, may have you needing to find out which terminal is left and which is right?

click the picture to enlarge.

You will need a test meter that looks like this, digital types will not work in this case.
I used small lengths of shrink tube to hold the test prongs in place, I then had a hands free way to test the pot.

THe meter is set on X10 and on the side of the main body is a rotary control, turn that untill you see a reading, by turning the pots control stem, you can then find out which of the two side terminals is the one to use? In this case its the left one, with the center being the common.

Sunbeam Stiletto dash panel

The year 1968 saw Rootes Scotland up date the 1967 Hillman Californian coupe body shell to a far higher specification than any other Imp before or after. The car was re trimed with black ambla vinyl on the seats, the front ones reclined also, the rear seats folded down and were also split, so you could still carry a load on one side and a passenger on the other.

The dash panel was very neat and very special, a proper lockable glove box and a full set of instruments.

There was also a decent three spoke steering wheel to finish the effect off.

Imps have style built in

The rear lamp clusters on the Mark 1 and 2 Imps were made by Lucas, the Amber indicator cover is part number L691 and the Red rear side and stop lamp cover, part number L692, they fit to a stainless base and are really fine quality.

Rootes Scotland were not alone in using this type of lamp fitting, other makers who did the same were TVR, Jensen, Lotus and Aston Martin, were there others?

Singer Chamois, when things go wrong

Druma inspects what he knows is trouble, Druma has ridden in this car as much as any of us but was not in the car the day that Janet aquaplaned on a very wet and part flooded beach road and hit a parked taxi.

Check the clean steel, at this time the Singer was around forty years old but look how spotless that steel is. We fitted a spare wing, that was the faster way to fix this smash.

The light fitting is by Lucas, a compliment in quality to the round ones at the rear of the car. This one is an L792 LH ( left hand) as also used by Ford on their Ford Lotus Cortina.
Note the cars original 12 inch rims and 145 x 12 inch tyres, they accept the standard wheel trims and hub caps, while the larger rims fitted later will not.

Singer Chamois closer

The car was this colour as originally supplied, today its quite a common paint shade on so called modern cars, many suspect I changed the  the paint colour, it just shows how up to date Rootes Scotland were back in 1967.

Click on the picture for a larger view.

The car now has the competition Monte Carlo road springs, up rated and 1 inch (25mm) shorter they compliment the lower profile tyres which are on 13 inch rims, thats about an R4000 (U$520) upgrade cost to rims, tyres and springs but does give the car a much nicer and faster ride.

Singer Chamois at the Bokke & Blomme factory

We restored the 1967 Singer Chamois about 18 years back, for 13 years it was Jeans everyday car, it then went through a stage of little use but I did fit a new rebuilt motor about five years back.

That engine is now run in very nicely, the car uses no oil, has around 4 bars of oil pressure, thats 55 pounds plus and needs no coolant top ups either. The car is now driven every other day and is a crowd puller where ever it goes.

Lotus Elan at East London

Again the Springbok Series and around 1968, one of those really good Lotus Elan cars, I wonder did it have the twin cam engine, anyone know this?
