The engine will not come out on its own on the Jaguar 3.8 Stype, the fore and aft space is just too short, in fact, the 3/4 inch long rev counter sender unit needs to be removed from the back of the drivers side camshaft cover to get the engine out, space is that tight!
When purchased the car had a decent engine in it, excepting it was the later 4.2 liter block, the car went fine but the pick up to the starter motor is different and allows only one bolt to connect on the starter motor. The continual having to retighten the one bolt finally saw me take out the 4.2 ltr unit and fit the correct 3.8ltr motor.
Rebuilt on the garage floor that engine is still working fine now, we have owned the car about thirty years now. That is Jean and the dog Zeus with myself in the Renault factory dust jacket. At that time is was the lable to wear, Nigel Mansel was super fast in the red 5 F1 in his Williams powered by Renault I think.
