When did the worlds first hatchback start, when did the last car in Britain get made with a starting handle on the engine?
Left click the picture, it should open for a larger view.
Those two questions may well be answered in this picture, in May 1963 Rootes Scotland released the first Hillman Imp to the world, its rear window opens up and has supports to hold it open. Those early cars had a hand crank starter handle, they did away with that after a few years, why bother, the cars started very well anyway. Check the rear bumper on this 1967 Singer Chamois, the crank handle slot still exists, even though the started dog to the lower crank pulley was by then not fitted.
