Timing a works R17 rally camshaft

This is not shown in the workshop manual 141, which is the original Rootes Scotland issue (later version?)  You will find the instructions in Tim Millingtons book on tuning the Hillman Imp though.

Note the cloth to stop junk falling down into the engine.

Pictures should enlarge if you click on them?

This engine is rather a special one, its a Singer Chamois Sport dated 1966 and was from car number 610 of just 2600 made of that model.

The instructions were published in a two page document and named Rootes original factory cam timing. In this case we needed a setting when the R17 cam has the number 1 inlet valve open 0.100" give or take 0.002" either way, this is when the engine is at TDC (top dead center). The CTS 1034 multihole chain sprocket will be needed for this job, as will be the dial gauge of course.

The dial gauge was set at 0.100" and then the engine turned clockwise untill it became zearo, the inlet valve is then spot on. Next is the fitting of the Rootes CTS 1034 multihole timing chain sprocket.

Check the many holes available to allow the various positions to be used when fitting the R series rally and race camshafts.

The R17 camshaft is now fitted, the nuts on the cam carrier and bolt on the camshaft have been applied Loctite to ensure they do not come loose.

The engine is now a fully re built unit and has Hepolite Powermax plus 0.060" pistons fitted, the capacity will now be 916cc, or 41cc, which is a usable increase in size over the standard Imps 875cc. there are also some BMW oil control seals on the eight valve stem/guides, so the engine will run really clean. They were an idea of the local Ferrari and Maserati agents, Viglietti Engineering who did the cylinder head for me
