Coventy Climax F1 engine

There were a number of race cars there yesteday with the Coventry Climax race engine in,one was as small as a 750cc engine size. Its that motor which spawned the origins of the Rootes Car Co, Hillman Imp.

This is the 750cc Coventry Climax engine in the Di Dugmore driven 1961  Lotus 11.

For me this is exciting stuff, the car is a Cooper T53,the engine is a four cylinder 2.5 litre twin camshaft Coventry Climax, its a 1961 car and the owner is Doug Mockett of the USA. Note the gearbox is made by Cooper. At its 250bhp Coventry Climax had given the world that magic number of 100bhp per liter.By around 1965 the 998cc Hillman Imp engine was giving that same number and more!

This has the mark of a work of art, just check the detaling and the way weight has been saved on the alloy water pipe by tapering the tube, its just so well done!

Cooper T53 - 1960
Chassis: lower and slimmer, tubular chassis wtih four main tubes, wishbone coil suspension all round
Engine: Coventry Climax FPF of 2.5 litre delivering 250hp, driving through a five speed gearbox
Drivers: Lorenzo Bandini, Jack Brabham, Masten Gregory, Bruce McLaren, Roger Penske, Roy Salvadori, John Surtees
Results: ‘60: 1st WCC, 1st Argentina, Holland, Belgium, France, UK, Portugal.

The same twin choke webber dcoe carbs as I use on the race imp engine I built last year, these may be a 45mm size,I used 40mm sizes on the 998cc Imp engine.
