Not just Volvo but the Perkins 4108 engine is the same.
This is the engine room on a 57ft yacht, nice and clean inside, the engine looks spotless.
Check how the white filter canister sticks out from the block, same installation as the Perkins 4108 marine engine. To remove the filter you unscrew it, which of course means a whole lot of oil will drip out and make a right old mess. Would it not make more sense if the engine designer thought about servicing and the escaping oil and mounted the filter so it hangs down.
How hard can that be?
